Master of Arts in School Counseling NKU Surveying the Landscape
In many states around the nations in the last 5 to 7 years licensure laws have changed and allowed nonteachers to become school counselors. This has really benefited the school counseling profession. It's valuable having your teaching experience. But it is also valuable to have people coming from a psychology background, engineering background I've had people in sports medicine come over. All sorts of different backgrounds. And it enriches us. That puts a real emphasis on the internship and practicum experience to make sure these people get real school experiences as soon as possible. But it really takes off the limitations.
About expectations of being a lifelong educator or being a teacher before you come into the school counseling program. I think that is really freeing, but it also gives a new dimension to the types of people that are dealing with students everyday in our high schools, junior high, middle schools and elementary schools. As people are seeking out programs, I think that some of the things you want to look for in a school counseling program are Is it aligned with the National Association of School Counseling model Are they teaching you how.
To be a comprehensive school counselor Are they teaching you how to advocate for students Are they teaching you how to advocate for your own identity Often you are not in a district that is not aligning with the national model yet. So how do you work in a district that is keeping you in a certain role, but you know with data, and you can show with data that you are way more effective in this other role How do you do that without losing your job How do you do that without burring bridges We really want to focus on that,.
So as applicants you want to look for a program that prepares you for that. As applicants you want to look for a program that will equip you with, as much as it is not fun, the math skills to do the data analysis of your program to show that school counselors are changing students positively in these ways they are increasing academic achievement in these ways they're reducing drop outs they are increasing postsecondary goings to either trade schools or work or two and four year colleges by this percent of graduates.
And these kinds of ttests and other types of data analysis are things that are very valuable but not always stressed for school counselors, because in prior generations of our identity, it wasn't needed. And now it's needed. We need to show how we affect students and how students are different because of what we do. That should be an emphasis as well as a focus on diversity being able to work with a variety of clients from a variety of backgrounds, socioeconomics and classes and all the different types of diversity there are that, which are vast and broad. I think that some programs.
UK Faculty, Staff and Student Leaders Visit Residence Halls After Office Hours
NAT Sound of Wildcat Marching Band VO Every August, members of the UK family helps UK freshmen move in, but the welcoming spirit doesn't end there because each October, faculty, staff, and student leaders spend time meeting with students in their residence halls. It's a program called After Office Hours. SOT We bring them to the students, and we bring them together, it's a wonderful way for a student to feel connected. SOT When you're in their environment, this is where they live, it's a little more homey and comfortable, so maybe they can relax a little bit..
SOT It really starts to get the students thinking, 'oh I do have a question and now I know the person to ask.' VO Going to the halls where students actually live makes a big difference. SOT It's hard sometimes for students who have a lot of questions to go to all the different areas and try to figure out what they need to do and who they need to contact, so it's a lot easier when they're just, they come downstairs and ask all the questions they need to and they can get them all answered in one night..
SOT It makes a it a lot more convenient for me to come down from studying or from doing something like playing a game or watching TV to come listen to these people and ask questions I already have that I would have asked if I had time to go to them. SOT I'm busy so them coming here is really nice because I can just see them and oh since they're here I might as well ask them a question. VO But students come away from the program with more than just answers.
SOT It's not just you're here to go to our class or come to our campus, but we're here to be a part of your life and to be you know, in a settling that you feel comfortable with. SOT The fact that they took time out of their personal life to come over here and talk to us, I mean they have lives, and children. SOT I feel like they obviously care more if they are willing to come out of their time and sit with us. VO Care that could help in UK's retention goals.
SOT If they have those connections and they identify with somebody and they know they can go to them during their normal office hours, maybe we can keep somebody from going home, maybe we might keep somebody from failing. SOT This program is really like a followup to say now you have come to UK we really want to care about your success, we really want to make sure that you are ok and so you don't just see us doing your recruitment efforts when you enroll but you are going to see us.
Justice Mary E. Fairhurst 79 J.D. 84, Honorary 06 Gonzaga University, We Are Zags
Gtgt I was a law clerk at the Supreme Court right after I graduated from Gonzaga Law School and so when I came back 16 and a half years after I left it was like coming home and I knew even when I was here the very important work that the court did but I also realized all the justices were human and they were all just doing the best they could and I can remember when I talked to the second justice I worked for Justice Goodlow phonetic and told him I was going.
What are your legal rights when pulled over by the police
Frequently clients and students and others ask me what are my rights when I'm stopped by the police well first of all what you should do is do three simple things use your common sense common courtesy and stay calm all of which are often in short supply when we're pulled over an inconvenienced but pulled to the side of the road whether it's day or night you really should keep your hands on the steering wheel and the vehicle illuminated when we reach over as we often times do to get a registration or other things out of.
The glove box the police officers see a furtive movement and become concerned for their own safety so until the police officer comes to the vehicle keep your hands on the steering wheel and make sure the car is sufficiently illuminated you have an obligation when stopped by police to identify yourself perhaps the police officer is only pulling you over to remind you or notify you of a safety issue maybe you have a defective light or something more than likely you're right there's some other issue involved but you do have whether it's justified.
Or not you do have an obligation to identify yourself and cooperate with the police if the police officer chooses to go further then at that point you may receive a warning or ticket and in some unusual situations you could even be arrested but if you receive a warning then there's no need to do anything further unless you choose to make a uh a bigger issue of out of it if you receive a ticket you can either pay the fine or you can request a hearing but unfortunately that hearing is not going to be the type you see on TV with the lawyer.
